is an Emeritus Research Fellow at St John’s College, University of Oxford, where the principal focus of his current research is on Literature and the Fine Arts in Egypt in the 20th century. He is President of the Academic Council of the Mediterranean Institute of the Humanities and Social Sciences (University of Aix-Marseille). His most recent major publication is Sensibilities of the Islamic Mediterranean (I B Tauris, London 2009).
