Rosa Yassin Hassan is a Syrian novelist and writer. She was born in Damascus in 1974 and studied architecture at university. After graduating in 1998, she became a journalist for various Syrian and Arab periodicals. Her first published book was a short story collection A Sky Tainted with Light (2000). Her first novel was Ebony (2004), which won the Hanna Mina Prize. Her third, Hurras al-Hawa (Guardians of the Air, 2009), was longlisted for the 2010 IPAF. In 2009, Hassan was chosen as one of the Hay Festival’s Beirut39, the 39 best Arab writers below the age of 40. Since 2012 she has lived in Germany.
