Ahmad al-Qarmalawi was born in Cairo in 1978 and moved with his family to Kuwait in early childhood, where he received his elementary and secondary education. He graduated from the International American School in 1996, then moved back to Egypt to study Architecture at the American University in Cairo, and later continued post-graduate studies at the Edinburgh University, Scotland. His first work was a collection of short stories, The First of Abbas (2012). His first novel The Last Post was published in 2014 by Dar al-Masriah al-Lubnaniya, followed by two more novels, Destiny in 2015, and Summer Rains, published by Maktabat al-Dar al-Arabiyah lil-Kitab (Cairo, Egypt) in 2017, the latter winning the 2018 Sheikh Zayed Book Award in the Young Author category, and excerpted in Banipal 65 (Summer 2019). Besides writing, he is an avid painter and musician.
