Rula Jurdi is a poet and novelist. She was born in Venezuela and grew up in Lebanon, moved to the US in 1989 and then to Montreal, Canada in 2004. She is Professor of Islamic History at McGill University. She has two novels and three poetry collections. She is a co-founder of Mïtra, an electronic magazine for art and literature.

Her novel Fi ‘ulbat al-dhaw’ (Camera Obscura), one of the 9 New Novels featured in Banipal 69, focuses on the conflict between violence and spirituality through an intricately plotted story that is set among Lebanon’s Druze community.
