was born in al-Amara, Iraq, on 20 October 1956, and has a degree in German Literature from Baghdad University. Since 1980 he has lived in Hamburg where he was awarded an MA in German Literature. In 1989, his German novel, Krieg im Vergnugungsviertel, was published by Perspol Verlag, Hamburg (later coming out in Arabic). His novels Lailat Mary al-Akhir and Makan ismuhu Kumait were published in Cairo (1995, 1997). A French edition, Une Ville nomée Komeit, was published in 1999. In 2004, Hanser Verlag published Die Reise nach Tell-Lahm (reviewed in Banipal No 22).
