Muwaffak al-Sawad
was born in Basra, Iraq, in 1971. He left Iraq in 1991 and settled in the Netherlands in 1994, where he still lives. He is a poet and a playwright, and works as a broadcaster on a Dutch-Arabic radio station. He has published his poetry in several Arab and Dutch newspapers and magazines and he has two collections published in Dutch translation. In 2002, he was awarded the Literary Prize of the El-Hijra centre for Arab art and culture. His first collection in Arabic was published in 2007.
