Waciny Laredj
Waciny Laredj, born in 1954 in Sidi Boujnan, is an Algerian writer and academic. He studied at universities in Algeria and Syria and wrote his PhD, in Arabic and French, on the Algerian novel. Since 1994 he has settled in Paris, teaching Arabic literature at the University Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3 and the University of Algiers 1, and lecturing at several other European and Arab universities.
He has written many novels dealing with Algeria’s history and its harsh upheavals. In recent years he has produced work on the tragedies of the Arab nation, questioning the sacred and static account of its history. His books are published in Arabic and French.
He has won a number of prizes for his work, including the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Literature in 2007 and the inaugural Katara Prize for the Arabic Novel in 2015. He has been longlisted for International Prize for Arabic Fiction four times: in 2011 for The Andalusian House, in 2013 for Lolita's Fingers, in 2014 for Ashes of the East: the Wolf who Grew Up in the Wilderness, and in 2019 for May – The Nights of Isis Copia.
