was born in Diyalah, Iraq. He studied at the Academy of Fine Art, Baghdad, and started writing as a poet (one collection 1976), later turning to fiction writing. He has published to date seven novels (the first in 1978) and two collections of short stories. He lives in Baghdad. In 1994 he published his acclaimed novel Sabi’a Ayaam al-Khalq [Seventh Day of Creation], which is excerpted in Banipal 32, translated by Wen-chin Ouyang.
