is Professor of Arabic at Harvard University. He has travelled extensively throughout the Middle East and North Africa. He has published a number of translations of Egyptian and North African fiction, including The Earthquake by Algerian author Taher Wattar by Saqi Books.

A pre-publication excerpt of The Earthquake and William Granara's introduction to the novelist and his work were published in Banipal 7's feature on contemporary Algerian literature, Spring 2000.
